"Get over the loss of the Crimea": the president of the Czech Republic gave advice to Kiev Czech President advises Ukraine to recognize the loss of Crimea Roman Goryaev21.06.2019, 10:44 Czech President Milos Zeman said that Ukraine and the world community should come to terms with the return of the Crimea to Russia as a fait accompli. According to him, the sanctions imposed by the European Union do not contribute to changing the policy of Moscow, which means that they are ineffective. He stressed that the same opinion, despite the rhetoric, adhere to both Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron.
Ukraine and the world community should come to terms with the transition of the Crimea and Sevastopol under the jurisdiction of Russia, Czech President Milos Zeman said in an interview with Barrandov.
"It is a fact. Ukraine and parts of the international community that disagree with this should be reconciled ",
- quotes RIA “News” the words of the Czech leader.
In addition, he focused on the fact that the sanctions imposed on Russia after the referendum in the Crimea and the development of civil conflict in the east of Ukraine, had no impact on the economy and politics of Russia. In addition, the positions of the leaders of the leading European countries of Europe - Germany and France - regarding the restrictions against Moscow have changed.
“They [Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron], apparently, understood that the sanctions did not affect the Russian economy and politics so that they would undergo serious changes. If these sanctions do not work, then, probably, they should be lifted, ”Zeman said.
On June 20, the so-called “Crimean” package of sanctions from the European Union was extended for another year. For the first time, restrictions related specifically to the organization and holding of a referendum in Crimea were adopted in 2014. In particular, among other measures there are bans on "the import of products originating from the Crimea or Sevastopol into the European Union", "investments in the Crimea or Sevastopol".
At the same time, Russia has repeatedly stressed that the negative economic consequences are reciprocal, but if Russia lost $ 50 billion during the sanctions, the loss of the European Union during the “straight line” on June 20, 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin estimated at $ 240 billion.
Crimea and Sevastopol became part of Russia as the subjects of the federation in March 2014 following a referendum organized by local authorities. The reason for this was the events in Kiev, when, as a result of a coup d';tat, the president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich, fled the country, and the forces of the so-called “euromaidan” came to power.
Kiev, the EU and the United States did not recognize the results of the plebiscite, and Ukraine continues to consider the Crimea as its own, but “temporarily occupied territory”. Moscow has repeatedly stressed that the issue of the territorial affiliation of Crimea is not on the agenda for the Russian Federation, and the topic itself is “historically closed”.
Milos Zeman is known as one of the main Moscow lawyers in the West.
He openly declares his sympathies to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. And it is not for the first time that he speaks about the return of the Crimea to Russia as a fait accompli.
Last year, his statements even caused a small scandal. True, he refused to apologize to Kiev for the position expressed.
According to him, Ukraine could demand an apology if he broadcast the official position of Prague, but these statements, according to him, are Zeman’s personal opinion, for which he is not obliged to apologize to anyone.
The Czech president is fluent in Russian and English, previously advocated the abolition of entry visas for Russian citizens, and also stated that he was against Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
The position of the Czech president is often annoyed by Kiev, while Zeman himself periodically comes up with proposals for Ukraine regarding its actions on the international and domestic political arena. In particular, in March he declared the need for the decentralization of power in Ukraine.
“It is necessary to change the constitution. Specifically, in [part] of Ukraine’s decentralization, so that all its regions have more autonomy, ”he said, adding that this is a“ sensible solution ”to the situation in this country, as laid down in the Minsk agreements.
However, Kiev refuses to comply with the political part of the agreements, even in the section that provides mechanisms for resolving the war in the Donbas. In particular, the new Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky - as well as the ex-leader Petro Poroshenko - refuses to conduct direct negotiations with representatives of the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR, and also does not agree to consider granting special status to these regions.
